Abstract

Research has been carried out on the preparation of activated charcoal supercapacitor electrodes from
coconut shells. making activated charcoal from coconut shells originating from the coast of
Banyuwangi. Activated charcoal is treated on the surface area through several steps, namely
carbonation and activation. Carbonation is carried out by pyrolysis, namely heating the coconut shell
at a temperature of 750oC under aerobic conditions. Activation was carried out by comparing 2
chemical activators including hydrochloric acid and potassium hydroxide with concentrations of 5 mol/L
each. This research focuses on the use of coconut shells as supercapacitor electrodes. Active carbon
from coconut shells was chosen due to the best distribution of capacitance and area. Supercapacitors
are more efficient energy stores compared to batteries. The electrode is made with an area of 1.5 cm
x 1.5 mm. Surface characterization of activated carbon using iodometric titration, electrode
characterization using voltammetry method. The maximum capacitor capacitance obtained was 15.59
F/g/S, SEM morphology showed a pore size of 8.457 μm, optimal iodine number of 2376.74.
